Is it possible that GM crops could offer a solution? Food and Beverage Business

GM crops could be a potential solution to the olive oil crisis in Europe caused by severe heat, according to industry experts. The extreme weather conditions have led to a decrease in olive oil production in Spain and Italy, resulting in record-high prices. The situation has pushed up demand for alternative oils like sunflower and rapeseed, although vegetable oil prices are expected to remain stable for the foreseeable future.

To mitigate the impact of extreme weather, industry professionals suggest exploring genetically modified (GM) crops, which have proven to be more robust and yield higher quantities in the United States. While there are no guarantees, GM solutions could offer some resiliency in the face of weather fluctuations.

Another factor to consider is the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation, which may affect palm oil markets. The legislation aims to ensure imported palm oil is deforestation-free and produced in compliance with relevant legislation. However, this could exclude smallholders who make up 40% of global production. Unless a solution is found, the EU market may lose these smallholder farmers, resulting in reduced palm oil supplies and higher prices. Consequently, the demand for alternative oils like sunflower and rapeseed is expected to rise, adding pressure to vegetable oil prices across the board.

In the ever-evolving food and beverage industry, trends in food manufacturing, processing technology, distribution, innovation, sustainability, regulations, packaging, marketing, and consumer behavior play a crucial role. Adapting to these trends is essential for businesses to stay competitive and meet the changing demands of consumers. By staying informed and incorporating these trends into their strategies, food and drink companies can position themselves for success in this dynamic market.
