Exciting Developments for the UK Fishing Industry: Over 2,000 Tonnes of Fishing Opportunities Secured in Faroese Waters for 2025

The UK fishing sector is set to receive significant advantages, with more than 2,000 tonnes of fishing opportunities established through annual negotiations with the Faroe Islands for the year 2025. This agreement, announced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), underscores the UK’s commitment to enhancing its fishing prospects through international cooperation.

Defra has valued these fishing opportunities at approximately £5 million, reflecting the historical pricing trends. Specifically, this agreement will grant UK fishermen access to 880 tonnes of cod and haddock, 575 tonnes of saithe, and a variety of other species, which include redfish, blue ling, ling, flatfish, and more. Such diversity not only enriches the fishing quotas but also promotes sustainability in the industry.

Moreover, this agreement reinforces the commitment of both the UK and the Faroe Islands to engage in scientific cooperation. As part of this collaboration, a new joint Compliance Forum will be established, enabling the two parties to exchange best practices concerning monitoring, control, and surveillance of fishing activities. This step demonstrates a proactive approach to sustainable fishing practices, ensuring that resources are managed responsibly.

The agreement marks the successful conclusion of negotiations not just with the Faroe Islands, but also with other entities, including the EU and Norway, at the end of 2024. Collectively, these efforts have secured approximately 750,000 tonnes of fishing opportunities for the UK fleet in 2025, which is estimated to be worth up to £960 million based on historical landing prices. This milestone not only showcases the strength of the UK’s negotiating power but also the vitality of its fishing industry.

Daniel Zeichner MP, the Minister of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, emphasized the significance of this agreement, stating: “I’m pleased the UK has reached an agreement with the Faroe Islands that will allow UK fishing vessels to take advantage of valuable fishing opportunities in 2025.” He further added, “This agreement concludes the UK’s fisheries negotiations for 2025 and will see our fleet ready to take advantage of the quotas secured through these key negotiating forums. This Government will always stand up for the British fishing industry, supporting our coastal communities through a sustainable and economically successful fishing sector.”

Throughout the negotiation process, Defra highlighted that the UK Government collaborated closely with devolved administrations. This teamwork aimed to ensure that all fishing communities across the UK stand to benefit from this pivotal agreement. By prioritizing the needs of diverse fishing communities, the Government demonstrates its dedication to fostering a resilient and prosperous fishing industry.
