Morrisons’ food manufacturing supplier Myton Food Group recently made a significant investment of £12.8 million into the development of its Falfish Freezing Centre. This state-of-the-art facility, which is said to be the largest of its kind in the UK, has the capacity to individually quick freeze up to 180 tonnes of sardines and various other fish varieties daily.

The new freezing center at Falfish boasts an impressive ability to freeze 112,000 fish per hour. This facility plays a crucial role in supplying Morrisons stores with over 80% of their fish products, including popular options like mackerel, cod, monkfish, and scallops, as well as spidercrab, wild seabass, and seabream.

Plans for the development of this facility were set in motion back in 2021 when Morrisons acquired Falfish after a long-standing 16-year partnership. This investment represents the largest single financial injection into Cornish shoresides in a generation, with support from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), who contributed £3.8 million through their UK Seafood Infrastructure Fund.

Andrew Thornber, managing director of Myton Food Group, expressed his excitement about the positive impact of this investment on the local industry and community. He stated, “Opening the UK’s largest fish freezing centre not only solidifies our position as one of the country’s major food producers but also significantly boosts our seafood export business. Since acquiring Falfish in 2021, we have been enthusiastic about this innovative project, which not only ensures a sustainable future but also guarantees the freshest fish for customers in Morrisons stores.”

This strategic move by Morrisons and Myton Food Group underscores their commitment to quality, sustainability, and supporting local fishermen. The investment in the Falfish Freezing Centre represents a forward-thinking approach that aligns with the companies’ goals of providing top-notch products to their customers while also contributing to the growth and prosperity of the local seafood industry.
