Lantmännen secures €90m for expansion of Romanian bakery facility Food and Beverage Business

Swedish agricultural cooperative, Lantmännen Group, has secured a significant investment of €90m ($95m) from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to support the construction of a state-of-the-art bakery plant in Bucharest, Romania. This new facility will serve as a central production hub, supplying a range of frozen baked goods to countries across central and eastern Europe. The investment will not only assist in financing the construction of the bakery, but also contribute to the modernization of Romania’s bakery industry.

The EBRD believes that this new plant will unlock the export potential of bakery products in Romania, a key wheat exporter in Europe. In addition, Lantmännen’s decarbonization commitments, which include reducing emissions from bakeries and transport by 50% by 2030, further highlight the company’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Areas of focus for emissions reduction include flour and raw materials, where Lantmännen plans to cut CO2 emissions by 23% and 39% respectively.

Owned by 18,000 Swedish farmers and with approximately 10,000 employees, Lantmännen is a leading player in the food and beverage industry. The company’s financial results for the eight-month period ending in August showed a positive trend, with net sales reaching SKr43.8bn ($3.92bn) and operating income at SKr1.83bn. Net income also increased to SKr1.32bn, reflecting the company’s strong performance.

While the exact timeline for the construction of the Bucharest facility is yet to be confirmed, Lantmännen’s investment in this new bakery site reinforces its commitment to growth and innovation in the food and drink business. The company continues to prioritize its expansion in the international market, capitalizing on emerging food and beverage industry trends.

In conclusion, Lantmännen’s investment in a new bakery plant in Romania is a strategic move to strengthen its foothold in the European market. The financial backing from EBRD will facilitate the construction of a cutting-edge facility that will not only support the company’s expansion plans, but also contribute to the modernization and growth of Romania’s bakery industry. With a strong focus on sustainability and emissions reduction, Lantmännen is well-positioned to adapt to food and drink consumer trends and capitalize on emerging opportunities in the sector.
