To limit global warming to 1.5°C, greenhouse gas emissions must be halved by 2030 and reduced to net zero by 2050, as mandated by the Paris Agreement. The food industry, responsible for around one-quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions, faces immense pressure to play its part in this mission.

In order to ensure personal and planetary health, it is crucial to reduce environmental impacts across food supply chains and throughout life cycles. This is the focus of our upcoming event, Climate Smart Food 2023, a three-day digital summit taking place from 19th to 21st September. We will be exploring how the food industry can drive a transition toward sustainable food sourcing, production, and consumption. You can now register for this free-to-attend summit.

Each day of the summit, from 2pm CET to 5pm CET, will feature interactive presentations, panel discussions, audience Q&As, fireside chats, and start-up pitches.

On the first day, 19th September, we will delve into climate smart sourcing. Sourcing practices are pivotal to reducing carbon footprints of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) which heavily rely on ingredients. We will discuss how to mitigate supply chain disruptions caused by events such as droughts, floods, or war. Additionally, we will explore the implications of sustainability legislation for food majors and assess the potential of regenerative agriculture.

Highlights of the first day include a panel discussion on managing disrupted supply chains and a panel discussion on the trustworthiness of regenerative agriculture.

The second day, 20th September, will focus on climate smart production. Producing more food while using fewer natural resources is essential given the growing populations and environmental constraints. Our discussions will involve decarbonization strategies for food majors, water scarcity and production, the future of plastic-free packaging, and the potential of the blue economy for sustainable nutrition.

Highlights of the second day include a panel discussion on water scarcity and food production, as well as start-up pitches showcasing alternative packaging solutions.

On the final day, 21st September, we will explore climate smart consumption. Overcoming barriers to sustainable consumption is crucial for transforming the food system. We will examine the impact of brands in reducing food waste, the best ways for sustainability credentials to stand out, European consumer readiness for novel food technologies, and the future of alternative proteins.

Highlights of the third day include a discussion on the regulatory landscape of novel foods and a panel discussion on pioneering the protein transition.
