Asda, the prominent supermarket chain, has announced its commitment to enhancing supplier engagement, referring to them as “partners for growth.” This strategic direction aims to foster stronger relationships with its extensive network of over 3,500 active suppliers, dealing with both branded and private-label products.

In its annual financial results for the year ending December 31, 2024, Asda’s parent company, Bellco Finco, reported a significant decline in pre-tax profits to £599 million, down from £180 million in 2023. Notably, the losses included a net impairment charge of £378 million and exceptional costs of £310 million attributed to its turnaround initiative, Project Future.

Furthermore, Asda acknowledged a 3.7% decline in like-for-like food sales during 2024. This downturn stemmed from challenges related to on-shelf product availability, a lackluster customer experience, and pricing pressures relative to competitors. However, the company is optimistic about recovery through enhanced collaboration with suppliers, improved depot operations, and strategic investments in in-store replenishment and pricing adjustments.

Their supplier engagement strategy centers on fostering world-class partnerships characterized by an “always on” communication approach. As Asda stated, “Our suppliers are our partners for growth, and positive relationships are critical to achieving mutually beneficial goals, particularly as we progress through our Project Future IT transformation as we separate our IT environment from our previous owners Walmart, and expand our business into the convenience sector.”

Additionally, the company is focused on streamlining operational efficiency. It facilitates this through a dedicated supplier portal, frequent supplier conferences, and dedicated efforts to integrate feedback. Annually, suppliers participate in independent surveys, which serve as the foundation for workshops aimed at enhancing supplier relationships.

In 2024, an impressive 95% of suppliers rated Asda as “consistently or mostly” adhering to the requirements of the Groceries Supply Code of Practice, a slight improvement from the previous year’s 94%.

Moreover, the Asda Rewards loyalty program continued to demonstrate robust growth throughout the year. Looking ahead, there remains significant potential to expand this initiative in partnership with suppliers and relevant third-party organizations.

Asda also emphasized the competitive landscape of the UK grocery market. It faces a myriad of macroeconomic challenges, including the upcoming increase in employer National Insurance contributions set for April 2025, the implementation of extended producer responsibility, and broader economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
