The Czech company Miwa has provided innovative modules to dm-drogerie markt shops in Germany, aimed at reducing packaging waste when selling a variety of loose food products under the chain’s private label ‘dmBio’. These products include pasta, rice, muesli, flakes, nuts, and almonds. The collaboration between Miwa and dm-drogerie markt aims to offer customers sustainable options for grocery shopping. During February and March 2024, Miwa refill stations will be launched in 15 dm shops located in Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hesse as part of a pilot project.

“As the largest German drugstore with a focus on quality and sustainability, dm-drogerie markt is an ideal partner for Miwa’s packaging minimization solutions. This partnership marks our second major collaboration in Germany after teaming up with Rewe. Our goal is to provide innovative solutions to conscious consumers looking for quality products,” states Mirek Lizec, Miwa’s executive director.

“At dm-drogerie markt, we prioritize reducing packaging waste and offering environmentally friendly solutions to our customers. By introducing these new dmBio shopping modules, we take a significant step towards a more sustainable shopping experience while addressing the demands of our environmentally conscious clientele,” says Kerstin Erbe, dm’s Managing Director responsible for Product Management and Sustainability.

Each Miwa module in the 15 shops will offer 12 different bio-quality food products that customers can dispense and weigh digitally using reusable containers. This introduces a new method of selling products by weight for dm.

In conjunction with the launch of this service, dm has prepared a comprehensive marketing campaign to inform customers in the regions. This includes postcards, newsletters, articles in the customer magazine, website information, and social media updates.

Utilizing reusable standardized capsules, Miwa’s solution promotes sustainability and efficiency in retail operations. These capsules reduce disposable packaging waste and seamlessly integrate with existing logistic processes, providing economic and ecological benefits for retailers.

The Miwa shopping modules allow customers to use reusable containers or bring their own for refills. They can then select and dispense products, monitor weights and prices on the display, and print price tags for checkout. The reusable containers can be returned or reused on future purchases.
