Super-cleaning and odor reduction solutions for the most popular consumer packaging materials: The two Starlinger business units viscotec and recycling technology have collaborated to offer high-end solutions for producing food-grade recycled PP, PE, PS and PET.

With a focus on Starlinger’s vision of “food-grade without compromise”, the partnership between viscotec and recycling technology combines the reliable post-consumer pelletizing line recoSTAR dynamic with the innovative viscoZERO melt phase decontamination technology and the efficient pellet flushing unit PCUplus. This solution enables super-cleaning and odor reduction for not only PET but also PP, HDPE, and PS packaging materials.

Paul Niedl, Commercial Head of Starlinger recycling technology, highlighted the significance of this advancement by stating, “Especially PP, PS, and HDPE post-consumer packaging waste degrades during recycling, limiting its use to lower-grade applications. The new technology upgrades the material, making it suitable for high-grade applications, including direct food-contact packaging.”

Emphasizing on recycling over down-cycling, the newly developed recycling process ensures thorough decontamination of post-consumer PP, PE, or PS food packaging. This results in food-safe, odor-reduced regranulate that can be reused in food-contact packaging production, elevating the quality of the final product.

The recycling system includes a recoSTAR dynamic recycling extruder, the viscoZERO melt phase decontamination reactor, and the PCUplus pellet flusher, among other components. This setup produces recycled resin in various grades, meeting the highest standards for direct food-contact packaging.

Starlinger is showcasing the recycling extruder, pellet flusher, and melt phase decontamination reactor at NPE in the West Hall.

Furthermore, Starlinger, a world market leader in woven plastic bags machinery, offers a complete machine range for this packaging type. Their “Circular Packaging” concept provides a closed-loop solution for industrial packaging made of PP or PET tape fabric, facilitating continuous reuse and promoting sustainability.

Harald Neumüller, CSO of Starlinger, emphasized the importance of recycling plastic scrap in the same application to achieve circularity. The company’s unique technologies for processing used big bags made of polypropylene or PET play a crucial role in advancing the plastic packaging industry towards sustainability.
