Smurfit Kappa’s innovative lattice box solves packaging issue for Isle of Wight Tomatoes

Smurfit Kappa's innovative lattice box solves packaging issue for Isle of Wight Tomatoes food and drink packaging, food and drink sustainable packaging, Food packaging, Recyclability Food and Beverage Business Smurfit Kappa

Isle of Wight Tomatoes, founded in 2007, is renowned for its exceptional farming expertise and its ability to tap into the island’s potential for tomato production. For more than 15 years, Isle of Wight Tomatoes has cultivated delicious tomatoes in the fertile soil of the Arreton Valley. By combining traditional agricultural methods with innovative techniques, they are devoted to offering tomatoes that capture the true essence of flavor.

A Perfect Solution for Isle of Wight Tomatoes’ Packaging Needs

The General Manager of Isle of Wight Tomatoes, Rob Waterhouse, reached out to Smurfit Kappa Gosport to address an issue with their existing packaging. The 1.5Kg punnet with a lid was causing problems during transportation, resulting in damaged produce and a negative customer experience. This prompted Isle of Wight Tomatoes to seek a new premium packaging design that would align with their rebranding efforts, led by Daniella Voisey.

An Innovative and Eye-Catching Packaging Redesign

After collaborating with Rob and making several visits to the island, the team at Smurfit Kappa Gosport developed an artfully engineered ‘lattice box’ design. This design features diamond-shaped holes to prevent fungal growth and ensures the tomatoes reach customers in perfect condition. In addition, the packaging stands out from competitors with a star logo that resembles a tomato calyx and a vibrant yellow color that represents the Island’s abundant sunshine.

A Boost for Isle of Wight Tomatoes’ Brand and Sales

The new packaging design has elevated the brand’s image, provided superior protection for the produce, and enhanced the unboxing experience for customers. Isle of Wight Tomatoes can now differentiate themselves from competitors on store shelves with their vibrant yellow branding. Moreover, this packaging solution meets consumers’ growing expectations for eco-friendly options, with half of Brits willing to pay more for products with sustainable packaging.
