Intermarché, the leading retail chain in France, has set a new industry benchmark by becoming the first to embrace SIG SwiftCap Linked closures on SIG’s carton packs. This remarkable milestone encompasses the entire private label juice portfolio, which comprises approximately 20 SKUs.

Agromousquetaires, the agro-industrial division of Les Mousquetaires group, supplies the fruit juice that powers Intermarché’s renowned Paquito own brand. Through a strategic partnership, Intermarché will adopt a packaging material from SIG Terra portfolio, which presents a more sustainable alternative, effectively decreasing the dependency on fossil plastics. SIG Terra portfolio features a range of structural options, including those without an aluminium layer, infused with renewable materials from the forest, and/or recycled components.

Unlike traditional materials, SIG utilizes tall oil as a forest-based raw material for the development of polymers, thus circumventing the usage of agricultural resources. These polymers are certified under the prestigious ISCC PLUS certification scheme, ensuring their compliance with rigorous standards. Furthermore, the ultra-thin aluminium foil integrated into the packaging material acts as a protective shield, safeguarding the contents from detrimental external factors such as light and oxygen, and adhering to the high standards set by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI).

By introducing tethered caps in their juice offerings, Intermarché pioneers the fight against plastic waste, setting an inspiring example for the French juice market. Remarkably, this progressive step comes ahead of the deadline set by the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive, showcasing Intermarché’s commitment to sustainability and aligning with the expectations of both consumers and regulators. Additionally, the ease of disposal and recyclability of these tethered caps further convey their environmental prowess, as they can be effortlessly recycled alongside the carton packs.

SIG’s forward-thinking tethered caps place equal emphasis on consumer convenience, ensuring an effortless pouring and drinking experience, thanks to its robust double hinge solution. Besides, these innovative caps seamlessly integrate with existing SIG filling machines and closure applicators, eliminating the need for significant investments. This exceptional flexibility and adaptability reassure customers that SIG’s packaging and filling solutions are a secure investment for the future.

As part of this remarkable transition, Merci! juices will now feature the SIG PremiumBloc 1,000ml carton packs, while Paquito will be available in both 750ml and 1,000ml packaging variants.

Arnaud Allain, adhérent-strategy and development director at Agromousquetaires in Montgiscard, expressed his contentment saying, “By taking the lead in France and embracing SIG’s tethered closures and sustainable packaging material, we contribute to the reduction of fossil resource consumption and mitigate our environmental impact.”.

Mélanie Révolte, marketing manager France and BeNelux at SIG, added, “Intermarché’s decision to opt for tethered closures and SIG Terra packaging material demonstrates their unwavering commitment to sustainability. Not only do we support Intermarché in meeting industry regulations, but we also cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly packaging. By choosing Paquito and MerciI! brands, consumers can responsibly contribute to supporting local farmers.”.
