In the latest phase of its modernisation project at Gratkorn Mill, Austria, Sappi Europe has completed the second of three phases, solidifying its position as a leading global coated fine paper producer. This significant investment aims to enhance production sustainability and reduce the risk of machine failure for its Magno paper range, ensuring maximum efficiency and productivity.

As the primary facility for Magno Paper, Gratkorn Mill plays a key role in the production of high-quality coated woodfree paper used in a variety of high-end publications worldwide. This modernisation project highlights Sappi’s dedication to meeting market demands for top-tier publications using the Magno paper.

Collaborating with suppliers like Honeywell and Siemens, Sappi has upgraded processes at Gratkorn Mill to improve system performance, operator efficiency, and overall productivity. By streamlining processes on a single automation platform, Sappi has achieved cost savings on spares and maintenance services, ensuring sustainable and reliable production.

“This investment underscores Sappi’s commitment to the power of printed media and paper-based solutions, securing our portfolio for the long term,” stated Rens Huijnen, Product Manager of Sappi Europe.

Looking ahead, the next phase of modernisation, scheduled for completion in 2025, will address common challenges in the paper industry, such as sourcing obsolete replacement parts. By leveraging state-of-the-art automation and electrical systems, Sappi aims to maintain high levels of paper production while enhancing support from suppliers.

Additionally, Sappi’s Gratkorn Mill has expanded its product range to include wet-glue label papers, catering to various applications in the food, beverage, and health industries. With recent introductions like Parade Label Pro and Parade Face SG, Sappi continues to innovate and meet the evolving needs of its customers.

Furthermore, Sappi Europe remains committed to sustainability and climate goals, with investments in renewable energy, water stewardship, and emissions reduction. Recent upgrades at Gratkorn Mill, such as shifting to a multi-fuel boiler and investing in hydro-electric generation, have significantly reduced CO2 emissions and enhanced overall environmental performance.
