Novolex® today proudly announced two significant milestones for its innovative compostable butter wrap: the 2025 Gold Award for Sustainability from the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) and certification as compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) in commercial facilities.
Produced by Novolex’s Shields® division, the new TerreGloss™ and Terrecote™ butter wraps seamlessly integrate performance with sustainability, effectively catering to the requirements of both consumers and dairies.

Novolex creates TerreGloss and Terrecote butter wraps using a proprietary, high-performance wax blend that contains no intentionally added PFAS. Specifically designed for 4 oz. butter sticks, these wraps are among the first of their kind to receive BPI certification for compostability. This certification confirms that the wraps fulfill all requirements for industrial composting, distinguishing them from wraps crafted with paper-foil or paper-poly materials.
The TerreGloss and Terrecote butter wraps feature:
- A smooth wax-coated finish that provides an excellent barrier against butter fats.
- Manufactured from a renewable paper base.
- Custom printing options available using environmentally responsible inks.
- Protection against water and oxygen to maintain product quality.
- Easy product release during wrapper removal.
- Suitable roll sizes for both Elgin (Eastern) and Western-style butter stick packages.

The FPA, the premier advocate for the expanding U.S. flexible packaging sector, celebrated the winners of its 69th Annual Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Competition during a distinguished ceremony, showcasing a total of 226 entries.
