Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (BAMUL) is piloting an innovative initiative to replace traditional polythene packaging with biodegradable covers made from corn and sugarcane derivatives for Nandini milk. Currently, polythene takes years to decompose, but these eco-friendly covers will break down within 90 days when discarded in soil. The launch is set for later this month in Bengaluru, with plans for a statewide rollout across Karnataka in the upcoming months.
Although the state government has implemented a ban on plastic due to its detrimental environmental impacts, polythene milk packets remained exempt until now, owing to the absence of viable alternatives for daily doorstep delivery. With the new biodegradable options available, KMF has made the decision to adopt these environmentally friendly alternatives.

To initiate this change, BAMUL has ordered 200,000 biodegradable covers for the pilot phase. If this initiative proves successful, the transition to eco-friendly materials for all Nandini milk packaging will occur in stages.

Although biodegradable covers come at a higher cost than conventional polythene and require importation, BAMUL has chosen to prioritize environmental sustainability over pricing. The federation believes that the long-term benefits significantly outweigh the initial investment.

Notably, even Gujarat’s Amul, a leader in India’s dairy industry, has not yet implemented such a change. BAMUL stands as the first in the country to embrace biodegradable milk packaging.
