One of North America’s leading coffee and tea companies, Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee (“Mother Parkers”), has invested in new production capability to offer a more sustainable packaging option for coffee formats. This initiative aims to provide a greener alternative to traditional plastic, glass, and metal containers by introducing the Boardio® paperboard canister from Graphic Packaging International, a world leader in sustainable consumer packaging.
Consumers are increasingly seeking packaging solutions that are better for the environment. Recent research indicates that many are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging. The Boardio canister has been well-received by consumers, who prefer it over the current can and bag options that dominate the retail coffee market.
The new packaging not only prioritizes sustainability but also offers practical benefits such as increased transportation efficiency. Compared to pre-formed cans, the flat delivery of Boardio requires only three trucks for transport, reducing the carbon footprint. Additionally, the packaging contains a minimum of 50% less plastic than Mother Parkers’ previous bag format and is made of a minimum of 80% FSC® certified paperboard.
Boardio also holds the How2Recycle® ‘widely accepted’ certification, ensuring that it is easily recyclable. Kim Cunningham, Chief Commercial Officer of Mother Parkers, emphasizes that this new packaging solution maintains the freshness and quality of their coffee while reducing plastic usage, supporting sustainability objectives, and driving efficiencies for retailers.
The partnership between Mother Parkers and Graphic Packaging has resulted in the development of a recyclable paperboard canister specifically designed for coffee using Graphic Packaging’s Boardio technology. Johan Werme, Head of Sales for Paperboard Canister Solutions at Graphic Packaging, underscores the commitment to innovation, sustainability, and meeting consumer demands.
Mother Parkers will begin packing roast and ground coffee in Boardio at its Fort Worth, Texas facility by late 2024. This transition marks a significant step towards environmental responsibility and customer satisfaction. To learn more about this sustainable packaging solution, visit www.graphicpkg.com.
