MM Packaging stands as a leading provider of cartonboard packaging in the UK, actively serving diverse sectors such as confectionery, tissue, pet food, cereals, frozen food, and beverages. Our commitment to food and drink sustainability underscores our relevance in the ever-evolving market.

In collaboration with the print industry body BPIF, we have developed a robust apprenticeship program that includes tailored purchasing and design qualifications. This initiative emphasizes sustainable packaging practices and aligns with current food and drink consumer trends.

We offer a comprehensive three-year apprenticeship within various departments of our cartonboard business. This program leads to an NVQ qualification up to Level Three, integrating essential training in first aid, fire marshal duties, and IOSH Managing Safely. Such qualifications contribute significantly to skill development in food and drink packaging.

Dave Whitworth, operations director at MM Packaging, stated: “The new apprentices are the latest success story for our business. The contribution they are making is invaluable to the site. In this instance, we have been able to add apprentices to our purchasing, design, and origination departments, demonstrating that talented people can find opportunities away from the manufacturing shop floor.”

Furthermore, Whitworth added, “Those who do fall into packaging find that it’s a great industry to work in – one that provides a varied career, and many stay in it for life. We need to train talented people to futureproof our business. It’s not just good for us but also provides a wide range of valuable skills for apprentices.”

Julian Freeman, managing director, remarked: “We’re delighted with the start our new intake of apprentices have made. They’ve contributed to the success of the business and further strengthened our workforce. Developing talent is a key strategy for MM Packaging, and our track record demonstrates that we can provide apprentices with long and successful careers. Recruitment is a challenge for many firms in the manufacturing sector, but with a solid apprenticeship program, we aim to attract the brightest and the best people to our business.”

Finally, Freeman noted, “We are grateful to the BPIF and training partners for their support and for giving our apprentices an excellent introduction to this fast-paced and innovative industry.”
