Michelman will present co-developed paper-based flexible packaging solutions and advanced coating technologies for paper cup applications at PACK EXPO International 2026.
Created with partners such as UPM Specialty Materials and BOBST, the showcased structures illustrate how fiber-based packaging can deliver the performance required for demanding food and beverage applications. Depending on the package format and the recovery infrastructure available, these designs can support recyclability, compostability, or two end-of-life options.
During the joint session, “Design Concept to Paper Packaging Reality,” representatives from Michelman, UPM Specialty Materials, and BOBST will examine case studies showing how paper technology, coating development, and manufacturing-process adjustments can move packaging concepts from initial design through commercial production. The presentation will provide practical insight into package development, scale-up, and market launch.
Michelman’s water-based coating systems are engineered to perform multiple functions. They can provide properties such as heat sealability and print receptivity while also strengthening the package’s overall barrier protection. Several of the featured structures incorporate the company’s recently introduced Nuvita® Life series, which was developed for fiber-based retail food packaging. The range includes a bio-based, plastic-free heat seal and topcoat suitable for direct food contact.
The solutions respond to increasing demand for packaging that aligns with changing food and drink regulations. Relevant requirements include California SB 54 and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives across North America, along with the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) and Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Innovation Stage 1 (N-4570). Speakers include Sarah Dembroski, North American Sales Director at UPM Specialty Materials; Ralph Giammarco, Global Business Development & Applications Director at Michelman; and Christopher Marshall, US Sales Director at BOBST.
Michelman will also feature its portfolio of multifunctional paper cup coatings, which are designed to replace conventional polyethylene (PE) linings without sacrificing the performance needed for hot beverage packaging. Commercial products such as Michem® Coat 9100 and the Michem® Coat 9250 series are helping cup producers reduce plastic content while advancing recyclable cup formats.
In addition, the company will outline its development program for next-generation cup coatings capable of supporting dual end-of-life routes. The portfolio includes fully bio-based options intended to enable plastic-free, home-compostable, and SUPD-compliant paper cup structures, reflecting broader priorities in food and drink sustainability.
