Building on the success of last year’s 300g Bordeaux bottle, McGuigan Wines has collaborated with Greencroft to introduce a 300g lightweight Burgundy bottle. This innovative packaging initiative marks a significant advancement in the BCorp brand’s mission to minimize environmental impact.

The rollout will encompass approximately 3.5 million bottles this year—about 596k cases—leading to an estimated reduction in CO₂ emissions from glass production by 82,000 kilograms annually. This initiative aligns with McGuigan Wines and its parent company, Australian Vintage’s, overarching commitment to decreasing carbon emissions within the global wine industry.

By achieving a 25% reduction in bottle weight, this innovation not only reduces production-related emissions but also enhances consumer options for environmentally responsible choices without compromising quality. In February 2024, Australian Vintage received B Corp certification, integrating into a global network of companies dedicated to fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economy. As a certified B Corp, the company adheres to stringent standards for verified social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability—striking a balance between commercial success and positive global impact.

The wines will be bottled at Greencroft Bottling, a cutting-edge facility renowned for its commitment to renewable energy. Primarily powered by wind and solar energy, including three wind turbines and a solar installation capable of producing 4.6 megawatts, Greencroft Bottling sets a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing.

The 300g bottle, developed by Verallia—one of the foremost glass manufacturers worldwide—is crafted from approximately 30% recycled glass and designed specifically for the wine sector. It retains the classic Burgundy aesthetic while achieving a 25% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the standard 400g glass bottle commonly used in the industry.

By positioning this innovative packaging solution ahead of market trends, McGuigan Wines and Australian Vintage reaffirm their leadership in sustainable practices, catering to the increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly products. This initiative represents a pivotal milestone in reducing the environmental footprint associated with wine production, all while maintaining the high-quality standards for which McGuigan Wines is globally recognized.

The McGuigan Wines Black Label Sauvignon Blanc, packaged in the new 300g lightweight Burgundy bottle, is now available at Sainsbury’s for an RRP of £7.50.
