deltaH Innovations’ Cool>Can™ to Make Commercial Debut at London Packaging Week
deltaH Innovations will unveil its headline-making Cool>Can™ at London Packaging Week this September. Founder and inventor James Vyse will also appear at the event to explain the technology and share the development story behind the beverage packaging innovation.
Taking place over two days at Excel London, the exhibition will give visitors their first opportunity to see a fully branded, commercial-ready Cool>Can on the shelf. Developed over a two-year period, the can uses a push-button chemical reaction to cool a room-temperature drink rapidly. Depending on the beverage’s initial temperature, the system can reduce it by approximately 10–15°C.
The cooling process relies solely on water and a patented salt-based coolant. Importantly, the design maintains the can’s recyclability, making it relevant to current food and drink sustainability priorities as well as emerging food and drink packaging requirements.
To demonstrate the technology’s commercial potential, deltaH Innovations founder and CEO James Vyse has joined forces with fellow Welsh company Brains Brewery. Together, they have brought Bayside Welsh Lager to market in a fully recyclable self-cooling can.
Visitors to London Packaging Week will be able to experience the product at the Discovery Theatre, where Vyse will present exclusive insight into the journey from early prototype to commercial launch. The development reflects wider food and beverage industry trends, including demand for greater convenience, differentiated products and practical food and drink industry innovation.
“London Packaging Week will be the first place to see a commercial Cool>Can,” said Vyse, speaking ahead of the event. “Up until now, we’ve been sending and discussing prototypes, but what we’ll actually be presenting is the first Cool>Can in a commercial partnership, with the brand actually on the can. It’s a huge leap from technical development and towards mainstream market adoption.”
The partnership unites a Welsh inventor with one of the country’s best-known breweries. Although the project looks firmly toward the future of beverage packaging, it also connects with Wales’ long-standing contribution to the history of cans. Felinfoel Brewery in Llanelli produced Britain’s first canned beer in 1935. Vyse believes the Cool>Can gives Wales another important milestone in the evolution of the beverage can.
“We have had many conversations with brands, but this one felt right,” he says. “I’m definitely a proud Welshman, teaming up with a Welsh brand and creating another piece of Welsh history, as I believe this is going to create something special in this business. London Packaging Week is a chance to get in on the ground floor as we scale up to take this to international markets.
“My dream is to get on a plane and land anywhere and see a Cool>Can!”
The event will also address the engineering, regulatory and commercial considerations involved in bringing new packaging concepts to market. These topics are increasingly important as businesses navigate food and drink regulations, food manufacturing trends and advances in food processing technology alongside changing food and drink consumer trends.
London Packaging Week will be held on 16 and 17 September at Excel London. Vyse will deliver his presentation, The self-cooling can: turning packaging innovation into reality, at 12:00 on Thursday 17 September in the Discovery Theatre.
