The Interpack trade fair recently took place, attracting a large number of visitors eager to see the latest advancements in food packaging. With 18 halls of packaging, processing and components, industry professionals were treated to a plethora of presentations and talks around almost every conceivable topic from the international packaging industry.

Despite the macroeconomic pressures the manufacturing industry is facing, there was plenty of innovation on display to lure back businesses. From automating processes and increasing productivity to reducing waste, the fair showcased many sustainable and efficient packaging machines that will help businesses go green and reduce waste.

One of the major exhibitors, GEA, showcased its impressive 25-metre-long production line for portion-precise slicing and loading into a thermoformer. The company’s technological expertise and competence in the entire slicing and packaging business unit will be available to customers for extensive product testing in the newly opened Technology Center at the production site in Biedenkopf-Wallau.

Another notable exhibitor was Buhler, which took a different approach by delivering a unique mix of plant-based concepts that will stretch customers’ imagination. The fair also centered around sustainability in packaging as a new standard, demonstrating the possibilities of robotics and explaining how entry into the circular economy can be achieved.

Digitalization was also a major theme, with major exhibitors explaining how it will play a huge role in the future of the food and beverage industry. Printing technologies, labelling, and marking were also extensively covered, with Domino Printing showcasing how digital technologies can help businesses reduce waste and ultimately increase productivity.

The packaging industry is relentless in experimentation and will continue to evolve to meet changing needs. Interpack offered industry professionals a wide range of voices to learn from – and in that package, it was very well presented.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for exhibitions, but Interpack saw a need to adapt and offer a program that showcased a wide range of voices. The exhibition was well-packaged, inspiring and exciting both professionals and consumers, and reminding us of the ability of the packaging and processing industries to be sources of inspiration and wonder in our everyday lives.
