In a groundbreaking partnership, Graphic Packaging International (Graphic Packaging) and UK supermarket giant Morrisons have joined forces to revolutionize the packaging for Morrisons’ private label steak range. This collaboration introduces a first-to-market, photographic print pressed board tray, offering a sustainable solution for food and drink packaging.
Together, the two companies have developed four recyclable cartonboard tray options for Morrisons’ premium, core, and entry-level steak products. This initiative will eliminate 250 tonnes of plastic annually from the supply chain. The premium trays, featuring Graphic Packaging’s advanced photo-quality print technology, set a new standard for sustainability in food and drink packaging and provide unique branding opportunities for the retailer.
Designed with a focus on sustainability, the core range utilizes unbleached cartonboard for a natural kraft look, while the entry-level ‘Savers’ range incorporates bleached cartonboard for a distinct aesthetic appeal.
The vacuum-sealed pressed trays offer the same shelf life as plastic packaging and can be run on Morrisons Manufacturing’s existing equipment without the need for additional investment.
Lauren Hutchinson, new business sales director at Graphic Packaging, expressed excitement about the launch, highlighting the collaborative effort between Morrisons and Graphic Packaging to achieve their plastic reduction goals. The partnership resulted in innovative tray solutions that not only meet sustainability targets but also provide branding opportunities through the incorporation of new print technology.
Dan Barnes, procurement manager at Morrisons, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering quality, value, and sustainable packaging options that align with consumer preferences. The collaboration with Graphic Packaging exemplifies their dedication to innovation in food and drink packaging.
Featuring photo-quality print and four-color print capability, the pressed board vacuum skin (VSP) trays are suitable for various fresh food applications, including deli meats, cheeses, and fish. This technology unlocks limitless branding opportunities, enhancing the visual appeal of the packaging.
