In an exciting development for the food and drink packaging industry, British sustainable packaging company Frugalpac has been awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation. Frugalpac is known for producing the Frugal Bottle, the world’s first paper bottle for wines and spirits, along with the machines that manufacture them.
The Frugal Bottle by Frugalpac is a game-changer in the industry, made from 94% recycled paperboard and boasting a carbon footprint 84% lower than traditional glass bottles. This innovative product has been designed to decarbonize the global drinks industry.
Not only can the Frugal Bottle be found on the shelves of Aldi and Sainsbury’s supermarkets, but it is also used by 45 brands across 25 countries worldwide, including the US, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and many European countries.
Frugalpac was recently invited by the Department for Business and Trade to showcase its Frugal Bottles at a Franco-British trade event in Bordeaux, attended by His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen. To mark the occasion, Frugalpac created a special paper bottle with royal insignia filled with Bordeaux wine, known as the ‘Cardboardeaux’.
With a focus on sustainability, Frugalpac employs 27 individuals and operates from its Innovation Centre in Ipswich, Suffolk. The company is dedicated to reducing carbon impact on the planet through the engineering of sustainable packaging solutions using recycled paperboard.
The flagship product, the Frugal Bottle, is made from 94% recycled paperboard and features an easily separable food-grade pouch for liquid storage. Studies have shown that this innovative bottle has a carbon footprint up to six times lower than glass bottles and significantly lower than plastic alternatives.
Aside from its environmental benefits, Frugal Bottles are lightweight, shatterproof, and ideal for outdoor events and travel purposes. Sainsbury’s and Aldi are among the supermarkets that have already embraced this innovative packaging solution for their products.
Frugalpac’s commitment to sustainability extends to the manufacturing process with the production of Frugal Bottle Assembly Machines. These machines allow for local production of Frugal Bottles worldwide, reducing carbon emissions further and enhancing sustainability.
Frugalpac’s CEO, Malcolm Waugh, expressed pride in receiving the King’s Award, attributing the achievement to their passionate team and collaborative partners dedicated to decarbonizing the drinks industry.
Recognized as the highest accolade for UK businesses, the King’s Awards for Enterprise celebrates outstanding achievements in innovation and sustainability. Frugalpac’s innovative approach to packaging has garnered international attention and support.
