DS Smith, a subsidiary of International Paper and a leader in fibre-based and sustainable packaging solutions, has partnered with Finnish herb and salad producer Famifarm Oy. Together, they have developed a recyclable fibre-based packaging solution that streamlines both packaging and unpacking processes.
The innovative packaging ensures that Famifarm’s fresh products are efficiently transported from the company’s greenhouses to grocery stores across Finland. Notably, the transport boxes feature a hatch mechanism that allows for quick and easy access to the products. This ergonomic design has been proven to accelerate the unpacking process for Famifarm’s customers by nearly four times compared to previous packaging methods. Moreover, the boxes can be easily folded after use, enhancing their sustainability.
Jussi Loimusalo, CEO of Famifarm Oy:
“Our customers, including major retail chains, appreciate the new functional transport box, which significantly reduces the time required by their employees. We prioritize a packaging partner who embodies transparency, sustainability, and reliability. DS Smith has shown an extensive understanding of our operations, which played a crucial role in our joint product development. Our focus is on cultivating long-term cooperation rather than seeking quick wins.”
The transport boxes prominently display the Famifarm brand, featuring eye-catching messaging printed on the outer surface of the fibre-based packaging. According to Loimusalo, aesthetic detail is critical, stating, “Our newly innovated corrugated cardboard boxes are of prime quality and look great. The brand must be prominently displayed.”
The new packaging concept was crafted by Jyrki Petrelius, Cluster Design Creative Specialist at DS Smith, alongside Veli-Matti Karvonen, Automation Expert and Development Manager at DS Smith in Finland.
“This packaging solution is designed for automated packaging lines and aims to enhance the business of our customers’ customers—namely, retail stores and grocery outlets. The solution is versatile, fitting both large and small retail environments. While protecting fresh products as effectively as before, it simplifies and speeds up the unpacking process,” noted Jyrki Petrelius.
Famifarm Oy stands out as Finland’s leading producer of potted herbs and salads, widely recognized for its Järvikylä brand, marked by the illustration of a family manor and the inscription of the year 1674. The company first gained popularity with potted leaf lettuce, later expanding its offerings to chives, chili, and a line titled ‘Home Cook’s Favourite Herbs,’ which features basil, thyme, and oregano.
Currently, Famifarm Oy’s product range consists of approximately thirty salad and herb options, with fourteen high-volume products. The brand is actively responding to consumer trends favoring pre-cut and bagged salad options.
DS Smith is committed to leading a shift towards a circular economy within the industry, providing sustainable packaging solutions across thirty-four countries. The company follows a target-driven sustainability strategy, embodying its mission of Redefining Packaging for a Changing World.
