Domino introduces new thermal inkjet technology for flexible packaging Domino, Flexible packaging, thermal inkjet Food and Beverage Business Domino

Domino Printing Sciences has recently unveiled a cutting-edge thermal inkjet (TIJ) system tailored specifically for flexible packaging lines, particularly in food applications.

The new TIJ into TTO solution, in combination with the Domino Gx-Series range, is a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) for flexible packaging lines that require straightforward 1-, 2-, or 4-line printed text codes as well as small-sized 2D codes up to 10mm².

Conducting rigorous on-site testing prior to its launch, the TIJ into TTO solution with the Domino Gx-Series range was put to the test at various trial sites with basic text code requirements currently managed by existing TTO technologies.

A spokesperson from a leading food and beverage brand shared their experience with the TIJ into TTO solution, noting that the switch to Gx-Series printers reduced the frequency of consumable changes from twice per shift to just once every four days. This improvement significantly minimized line stoppages for consumable changes, thereby boosting overall productivity.

Senior Product Manager – High Resolution Inkjet at Domino Printing Sciences, Alex Mountis stated, “While TTO has been the go-to choice for flexible packaging lines, we understand that it may not always offer the most cost-effective solution in terms of total ownership cost. Our TIJ into TTO solution with the Domino Gx-Series range addresses this need by providing an easy-to-use, efficient, and cost-effective option for manufacturers with uncomplicated code requirements that may not be effectively met by current TTO solutions.”

Evaluating the cost and waste savings, Domino’s TIJ into TTO solution with the Domino Gx-Series range demonstrated up to 95% waste reduction and 70% cost savings compared to standard TTO solutions printing 1- and 2-line text codes, as well as 4-line text codes utilizing two printheads.

Manufacturers opting for Domino’s TIJ into TTO solution can anticipate a return on investment within a quick 12-month timeframe. Designed as a direct replacement for existing TTO systems, the TIJ into TTO solution with the Domino Gx-Series range integrates seamlessly within current production lines without the need for complex installation changes.

Moreover, with its integrated printhead heater, the TIJ into TTO solution with the Domino Gx-Series range ensures optimal performance even in challenging environments with cold temperatures, such as chilled or frozen food applications. Suitable for plastic and metallised film applications, the system offers a variety of ink options to cater to diverse application requirements.

Portfolio Director at Domino Printing Sciences, Paul Clarke, remarked, “For flexible packaging lines requiring alternative code solutions, including intricate text, graphics, and larger-sized barcodes, we offer an array of alternative solutions, such as our new Vx-Series TTO printers and UV laser for recyclable plastic films.”
