In the realm of sustainable food and drink packaging, tailored solutions are essential. As Peter Hackl, Head of Packaging at delfort, states, “Barrier paper is never standard; it must always be tailored to the product it is intended to package.” At Fachpack 2025, delfort will unveil its diverse range of barrier papers, catering to various applications—from ice cream bars and chocolate to muesli. The exhibition will also highlight fold-wrap solutions for items like butter, stock cubes, and confectionery.

Every food and drink product comes with distinct requirements regarding barrier functionality. For instance, ice cream and other frozen items need protection against moisture and freezer burn. Similarly, cheese and chocolate demand reliable fat barriers, even under high temperatures. In contrast, dry products such as muesli, rice, or powders necessitate robust barriers against oxygen and moisture. “We specifically combine the right barrier with the requirements for storage, transport, packaging process, and recycling,” explains Hackl.

The choice of packaging form is equally significant. At Fachpack, delfort will present various options including tri-fold, stand-up pouches, and flow-wrap packaging, featuring transparent paper variants. All packaging can be printed using flexo and gravure techniques and is designed for heat- or cold-sealing. Moreover, they are compatible with standard FFS packaging machines. “We ensure this through close cooperation with various packaging machine manufacturers,” Hackl adds. Effective machine settings often determine the smooth transition from conventional materials to innovative sustainable barrier papers. “Here, we create process reliability for our customers through preliminary testing.”

In addition to technical considerations, recyclability and compliance with regulations hold significant importance. “Legal requirements such as the PPWR and the EU Packaging Regulation are a key guideline for us in our development,” remarks Hackl. Additionally, delfort’s barrier papers are crafted from renewable fibers sourced from FSC and/or PEFC certified pulp suppliers. They also meet recyclability criteria according to the CEPI test method.
