Signature Flatbreads, together with Al’Fez—the North African and Middle Eastern foods brand—has worked with Coveris to introduce a new packaging solution to the market.
The PolyFlex Thermoform format is initially being used for three Al’Fez flatbread products, which are now available through retailers across the UK and European Union. One of the launch products is the Turkish-Style Flame Baked Mini Flatbreads. Its printed pack combines recognizable Al’Fez branding with appealing serving suggestions to attract shoppers and create stronger visibility on the shelf.
PolyFlex Thermoform uses a recycle-ready, nylon-free polyolefin structure. The lidding film combines polyethylene and polypropylene, while the base web is made from monomaterial polyethylene. This design provides an alternative to the non-recyclable formats commonly used for thermoformed food packaging and reflects wider food and drink sustainability priorities.
The packaging can currently enter front-of-store soft plastic recycling schemes operated by major UK retailers. Its development also demonstrates how food processing technology and food and drink packaging innovation can support practical improvements in the food and beverage industry trends shaping bakery and prepared-food production.
Mark Robinson, UK flexibles technical director, Coveris, said: “The launch of PolyFlex Thermoform is a significant advancement in thermoforming packaging and a new solution for the bakery sector for high-barrier applications. We have worked collaboratively with Signature Flatbreads to ensure PolyFlex Thermoform delivers across every requirement, from efficient packing through to shelf-life validation and overall functionality. It is rewarding to see the recycle-ready solution now fully launched aligned with our No Waste strategy”.
