In an exciting development, Coveris, a top packaging manufacturer, is enhancing its barrier films capabilities to produce vacuum skin packaging (VSP) at its specialized extrusion site in Winsford, Cheshire. This multi-million pound investment reinforces Coveris’ position as the UK’s largest blown extrusion facility of polyethylene (PE) films, catering to the food and drink packaging industry.
The expansion at Coveris Winsford involves the establishment of a dedicated manufacturing hall and the installation of state-of-the-art VSP conversion equipment. Leveraging its expertise in co-extrusion and nine-layer EVOH barrier film production for the meat, fish, and dairy sectors, Coveris Winsford excels in manufacturing vacuum skin packaging.
VSP is known for its skin-like appearance around products, enhancing visual appeal for consumers. With a potential increase of up to 25 days in shelf-life and improved product security compared to traditional packaging, retailers stand to benefit significantly from Coveris’ VSP films. These films are compatible with a range of materials, including PE, PET, PP, aluminum, and cartonboard.
Coveris Winsford’s commitment to innovation is evident through its Film Science Lab and technologists dedicated to advancing, optimizing, and validating their award-winning films. Ongoing projects aim to reduce the thickness of Coveris VSP films below industry standards, maximizing benefits while minimizing environmental impact in the realm of food and drink sustainable packaging.
Highlighting the significance of this expansion, Sujoy Bose, Managing Director of Coveris Winsford, states, “Coveris remains a leader in developing high-performance technical films. The introduction of VSP films to our product portfolio underscores our commitment to providing solutions for food sectors that require extended shelf-life and product safety. This initiative aligns with Coveris’ No Waste vision, emphasizing our dedication to reducing product waste.”
