Coveris, a leading European packaging manufacturer, has unveiled an innovative board-based MAP tray solution tailored for the meat, fish, and poultry sectors. This advancement reduces plastic usage by 90% while ensuring recyclability and optimal shelf-life.

With an impressive plastic reduction of up to 90%, Coveris’ new BarrierFresh MAP trays integrate sustainably sourced board with a specially designed EVOH barrier film. This combination results in a fully printable, hermetically sealed, single-SKU pack that effectively preserves product integrity and recyclability within the chilled meat, fish, and poultry (MFP) category.

Promoting less plastic and enhanced freshness, these new 21-day shelf-life packs offer unique shelf presence, both in-store and online, all while utilizing a single packaging format. This ensures that manufacturers can maintain brand visibility and consumer appeal.

The BarrierFresh MAP trays are an ideal choice for the breaded poultry, meat, and fish segments, as well as prepared food applications. They are lightweight, stackable, and compatible with various existing machinery lines, depending on the specific application. This new launch presents manufacturers with a sustainable packaging alternative that does not compromise performance or shelf appeal.

Will Mercer, Coveris Business Unit Paper’s Research and Development Director, stated, “our BarrierFresh MAP solution marks a unique breakthrough for this category, offering a reduced-plastic, reduced-packaging solution that delivers the same barrier performance and shelf-life benefits as traditional rigid plastic trays, whilst maintaining recyclability for the consumer. The launch of BarrierFresh MAP trays aligns perfectly with our vision of No Waste and supports the industry’s growing demand for reduced-plastic alternatives.”

The introduction of BarrierFresh MAP trays expands Coveris’ portfolio of fibre-based recyclable packaging solutions, reinforcing its commitment to pioneering market-leading sustainable innovations in food and drink packaging.
