Mondi, a sustainability-focused packaging and paper manufacturer, has partnered with Swiss converter ATS-Tanner to develop a unique paper band that can securely hold individually labelled products or bundles, reducing unnecessary plastic in food packaging.
The paper band is made by ATS-Tanner using Mondi’s robust and environmentally-friendly kraft paper, Advantage MF SpringPack. The paper is coated with a functional barrier on both sides of the band and then sealed without any adhesives using ultrasound technology. This minimizes packaging waste and results in a cost-effective solution. The coated bands are branded as TruePaper by ATS-Tanner.
Mondi’s kraft paper is strong enough to carry weights of up to 20 kg, making it suitable for a range of products, from fruit and vegetable bundles to multipacks of bottles and other consumer goods. The high-quality paper also offers excellent printing results, enabling brands to communicate their message to the end-user.
Furthermore, Mondi’s kraft paper is crafted from renewable and responsibly-sourced materials, making it environmentally friendly. It is also recyclable, meeting Germany’s strict 95/5 sustainability ratio and can be recycled alongside other paper waste in existing European paper recycling streams.

According to Serge Tanner, the owner and CEO of ATS-Tanner, the TruePaper banding machine is energy-efficient, consuming 98% less energy than comparable shrink wrapping machines. He added, “TruePaper is a resource-efficient solution that can wrap products measuring up to 1300 x 500 mm and is convenient to store. Using paper instead of plastic is not the only benefit; it also allows for a reduction in energy consumption.”
With this collaboration, Mondi and ATS-Tanner have paved the way for a sustainable future in food packaging, delivering an innovative and cost-effective solution that provides excellent product protection while prioritizing the environment.
