Carbios and Sleever have announced a significant milestone: the signing of an exclusive, long-term contract to collaboratively develop Home Compost biodegradable mono-oriented transverse shrink films.
This partnership encompasses a master supply agreement for Carbios Active, an innovative enzymatic solution crafted by Carbios specifically for the biodegradation of polylactic acid (PLA). Carbios Active is strategically integrated into the transformation process, ensuring that these PLA-rich films not only become Home Compost compliant but also guarantee quality compost. As a result, these films open avenues for use in various applications, including labeling, wrapping, and securing packaging in both the luxury goods and mass retail sectors. This initiative offers an eco-designed solution for food and beverage packaging without requiring a dedicated value chain.
Sleever, a French family-owned enterprise with a rich 50-year legacy, boasts a substantial international presence, with 14 industrial sites across five continents. Backed by over 500 patents and extensive R&D, Sleever manages the entire value chain—from film formulation and printing to manufacturing and service provision. For more than 15 years, the company has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to collaborating with industry experts to enhance circular economy streams. Their focus lies in addressing packaging recyclability challenges while reducing the carbon footprint of products.
Carbios Active seamlessly integrates into the film manufacturing phase, enabling PLA-rich packaging to be composted at room temperature. This integration substantially improves the life cycle of packaging materials. The encapsulated enzyme, Carbios Active, gives rise to a new generation of products formulated from biopolymers that can be composted under ambient temperature conditions—regardless of soil quality—while ensuring the resulting compost is free from toxicity and microplastics.
Importantly, a production line is already operational at Carbios headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France. This line can produce 2,500 tonnes per year of Carbios Active, which is vital for producing the equivalent of 50,000 tonnes per year of enzymatic PLA.
