Arla Foods, the well-known dairy cooperative, recently announced its plan to transition to clear milk caps from this month onwards, as part of its efforts towards making its packaging 100% recyclable across its entire branded product range by 2025. Although Arla’s current coloured milk caps are recyclable, they cannot be recycled back into food-grade packaging. The introduction of clear caps will enable the retention of the material for reuse within the food sector while also ensuring that the clear caps are made with at least 30% recycled material (rHDPE), thereby remaining consistent with the bottle’s 30% recycled content.

Packaging plays a vital role in protecting the quality and freshness of milk products, and Arla is focused on reducing emissions by exploring new ways to reduce its climate impact through its packaging material, production, transport, and logistics, and on-farm operations. Catriona Mantle, Head of Milk, Organic, and Yogurt at Arla, stated that the company is committed to its climate journey and continuously exploring new ways to reduce its climate impact from its packaging material. Mantle further added that the switch to clear caps means that the caps can be easily recycled back into food-grade packaging.

Furthermore, Arla’s efforts to transition to fully recyclable packaging and 0% fossil fuel based plastic by 2030 are commendable. By introducing clear caps across their milk portfolio, nearly 1,000 tonnes of food-grade plastic will be retained within the circular system. The move also highlights Arla’s commitment to sustainability and ensuring that they are doing their part in reducing the environmental impact of their products.

In conclusion, Arla’s decision to transition to clear milk caps is a step in the right direction towards achieving their sustainability goals. It is a clear indication of their commitment to reducing their environmental impact, and this move can also inspire other companies to follow suit.
