Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe), a division of Ardagh Group, announced today the production of the world’s first emerald green bottles using its innovative NextGen Furnace, specifically for long-term client Jägermeister.
For over twenty years, AGP-Europe has manufactured bottles for Jägermeister. Now, both companies are enhancing their collaboration to significantly minimize the CO₂ footprint associated with the iconic Jägermeister glass bottle. This partnership aims to advance food and drink sustainable packaging solutions.
“Partnering exclusively with Jägermeister, we’re scaling innovation with impact,” states Joris Goossens, R&D Project Manager at AGP-Europe.
“After successfully producing lower-carbon amber glass in our NextGen Furnace, our next objective is to employ this groundbreaking technology to create green glass, ultimately delivering the first lower-carbon emerald glass bottles to the spirits sector.”
AGP-Europe’s NextGen Furnace, located in Obernkirchen, Germany, commenced glass production at the end of 2023. This cutting-edge hybrid technology utilizes 42 electrodes, facilitating up to 80% electrical heating. Proven effective in the production of amber glass packaging, it operates with 60% renewable electricity for glass melting and incorporates up to 70% recycled content—resulting in a 64% reduction in the carbon impact of amber glass packaging.
The renewable electricity sourced from this innovative process comes from a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sunnic Lighthouse GmbH and parent company ENERPARC AG in Germany.
“The signing of a contract for up to 14 million 70cl bottles from the NextGen Furnace in Obernkirchen marks a significant milestone in our enduring partnership with Ardagh Glass Packaging. The production of our green Jägermeister bottles using this new technology aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by an anticipated 64% per bottle1. If successful, this achievement will directly advance our sustainability objectives,” explains Carsten Doliwa, Vice President Procurement at Mast-Jägermeister SE.
