Aran Group’s MonoFlex bag-in-box solution has achieved the prestigious Gold Award in the “Packaging that Saves Food” category at the 2026 WorldStar Packaging Awards, hosted by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) during Interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf.

The MonoFlex solution features a flexible packaging design made primarily from over 95% polyethylene, with a reduced EVOH barrier layer. This innovative structure aligns with the Design for Recycling guidelines related to polyethylene streams while ensuring the necessary oxygen barrier and mechanical strength that liquid food applications demand.

The challenge it aims to solve is well-known in the food and beverage industry. Traditional multi-layer packaging materials provide sufficient barrier protection but are incompatible with standard PE recycling methods. In contrast, solely mono-PE structures often fail to meet the oxygen transmission requirements essential for sensitive liquids. MonoFlex serves as Aran’s solution for this disconnect, offering a compatible single-stream material that effectively maintains shelf-life quality for various products.

“The evolution of food packaging is increasingly measured not only by its protective capabilities on store shelves but also by its impact after consumption,” stated Tal Laufer, CEO of Aran Group. “MonoFlex was designed to bridge both ends of this spectrum—providing barrier efficiency for manufacturers while ensuring recyclability for the ecosystem. This dual focus reflects the rising standards expected by our clients, and it’s the benchmark we strive to meet.”

This recognition coincides with significant regulatory transitions regarding recyclable packaging, shifting from voluntary practices to mandatory compliance in key markets within the food and beverage industry. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will be implemented on August 12, 2026, enforcing strict requirements related to recyclability, minimum recycled content, and Extended Producer Responsibility. In the U.S., California’s SB 54, known as the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act, will come into effect on May 1, 2026, complemented by a growing number of state EPR initiatives from Oregon to Maine. Similar regulations are emerging in Canada and other regions.

For Aran, which supports food and beverage manufacturers navigating these compliance landscapes, MonoFlex represents a key part of a comprehensive strategy emphasizing the development of mono-material solutions throughout the company’s bag-in-box and aseptic flexible packaging offerings.
