Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC), a prominent figure in creating responsible packaging solutions globally, has revealed a significant development in its partnership with Metsä Group, a leading Finnish forest industry organization, and G. Mondini, renowned for its food packaging equipment.
This collaboration has led to the creation of a fully integrated fiber-based tray system featuring a lightweight barrier liner and a top web, specifically designed for applications involving protein and chilled ready meals.
This innovative solution will be showcased at Interpack, Europe’s premier packaging trade show, scheduled from May 7 to 13 in Düsseldorf. Attendees will see a live demonstration on G. Mondini’s Trave® Streamline machine. The Amcor development team has worked in close collaboration with G. Mondini to ensure optimal machine performance for meat and food manufacturers, marking a major milestone in the shift towards fiber-based packaging.
Designed to safeguard perishable items and enhance shelf life, the AmFiber™ tray and film combination aligns with the growing consumer demand for sustainable materials. It presents brands with a distinctive packaging option that not only boosts shelf appeal but also supports their environmental pledges.
The AmFiber™ tray utilizes Muoto™, an innovative molded fiber packaging created by Metsä Group’s innovation branch, Metsä Spring. This solution is recyclable* and is derived from renewable wood obtained from northern forests. It is complemented by Amcor’s advanced barrier liners and top-web films, tailored for various product requirements. The packaging works effectively with MAP and Skin technologies, contributing to reduced plastic usage while extending shelf life. It also features conveniences like microwaveable, ovenable, and easy-peel options.
Paolo Mondini, General Manager at G. Mondini SpA, emphasized, “At G. Mondini, we have always believed that truly more sustainable packaging can only succeed if it performs flawlessly on the production line. Our collaboration with Amcor and Metsä Group is a perfect example of what happens when machine expertise, barrier technology, and fiber innovation come together. The result is packaging that upholds the most rigorous food safety requirements, delivers a state-of-the-art consumer experience, and meets retailer expectations. The Trave® Streamline running live at Interpack will demonstrate that fiber-based solutions are not just an environmental choice – they are a high-performance one.”
Antti Valtonen, VP of the Muoto project at Metsä Spring, stated, “Our collaboration with Amcor began about a year ago, and it is highly rewarding to see this partnership – together with the valuable contribution of G. Mondini – now delivering tangible results. By combining Muoto’s exceptional quality and built-in sturdiness with excellent barrier performance, we are creating a solution that genuinely comes to life. This collaboration illustrates how the right partners can bring together performance, reliability, and suitability for demanding food applications.”
Ilya Syshchikov, Amcor’s Vice President of Global Fiber, added, “High-performing packaging requires a fully integrated system, where every element, from tray and barrier liner to top web and machinery, works seamlessly together. By collaborating with Metsä Group and G. Mondini, we are creating a complete packaging solution that simplifies implementation, addresses customer challenges, and helps brands focus on delivering exceptional products.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to witness live demonstrations of the new all-in-one packaging solution at the G. Mondini booth (Hall 5 / Booth F24) during Interpack. The G. Mondini Trave® Streamline packaging system facilitates a smoother sealing process for trays, enhancing production efficiency. Moreover, G. Mondini’s digital printing capabilities allow for direct customization of fiber trays, providing strong brand differentiation while maintaining a natural appearance.
Through the collaboration of Amcor’s barrier films, Metsä Group’s expertise in wood processing, and G. Mondini’s machinery capabilities, the partners have developed an innovative all-in-one solution that advances sustainability and has been proven to operate efficiently on Mondini systems as well as other leading packaging platforms.
*The fiber recovery rate for the tray with liner exceeds 80%, according to the CEPI recyclability laboratory test method Ver. 3 (2025).
