Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX:AMC), a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, has collaborated with Saputo Dairy UK, a producer of leading British food brands, to win the prestigious UK Packaging Awards 2023 for ‘Flexible Plastic Pack of the Year’. This recognition is for their groundbreaking work in developing a new, recycle-ready grated cheese packaging for the popular cheese brand, Cathedral City. By using Amcor’s AmPrima® recycle-ready packaging, the flowpack for grated cheese not only meets consumers’ demands for freshness and convenience, but also significantly improves sustainability.

The newly developed recycle-ready grated cheese flowpack has successfully reduced Cathedral City’s carbon footprint by an impressive 47% compared to its previous packaging. Following The Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging (CEFLEX) guidelines, this packaging is certified as recyclable by the cyclos-HTP institute.

Consumers can easily recycle the new mono-PE AmPrima® flowpack for Cathedral City by returning it to large supermarkets or participating in the TerraCycle Cheese Packaging Recycling Programme available at multiple locations across the UK.

“This collaboration tackles the major challenges faced by cheese manufacturers – how to transition to more sustainable packaging that can be used on high-speed production lines without compromising product protection and shelf life. Our AmPrima® solution seamlessly integrates with Saputo Dairy UK’s existing filling machines, allowing for a smooth transition to a more sustainable alternative,” said Yi Jiang, Marketing Director Dairy at Amcor.

According to recent research by Amcor, “proper sealing” is rated as the most important packaging requirement by 70% of European hard cheese consumers. To cater to this demand, the new Cathedral City grated cheese packaging incorporates an easy-close zip function to maintain product freshness and reduce food waste.

Saputo Dairy UK’s Packaging Controller, Neil Richards, stated, “The switch to the new recycle-ready packaging is a significant milestone for Saputo Dairy UK and the nation’s favorite cheese brand. We will continue our commitment to offering award-winning packaging solutions as part of our goal to make 100% of our packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable.”

This award-winning pack from Amcor exemplifies their ever-expanding range of recycle-ready packaging. The company has dedicated substantial resources to fulfill its pledge to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. Currently, over 80% of Amcor’s global flexible packaging portfolio is available in recycle-ready solutions.
