This evening, Members of the Senedd will vote on the new Welsh Agriculture Bill, which aims to support farmers in adopting sustainable land management practices through the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS). With nearly 90% of Welsh land dedicated to farmland and the importance of addressing climate change and nature emergencies highlighted by the recent Climate Change Committee report, this legislation has the potential to significantly impact biodiversity.

The timing of the Bill is crucial, as recent disruptions in the UK’s supply chain have exposed its fragility. If passed, the Welsh Agriculture Bill has the opportunity to strengthen the Welsh food system. Aled Jones, President of NFU Cymru, has described it as a historic move and possibly the most important legislation for Welsh farmers since the Westminster 1947 Agriculture Act.

So, what changes will the Wales Agriculture Bill bring? If passed, it will make Wales the first UK country to implement a complete ban on the use of snares and glue traps. Additionally, the bill will amend the Forestry Act 1967 to better protect wildlife and the environment during felling operations. It will also provide agricultural tenants with protection to ensure fair access to financial support.

At the core of the Bill is the concept of Sustainable Land Management (SLM), which underpins the SFS. The Scheme will reward farmers who consistently deliver on the set outcomes. This emphasis on sustainability demonstrates Wales’ commitment to addressing the climate emergency.

Rural affairs minister, Lesley Griffiths, has highlighted the importance of the Welsh Agriculture Bill, stating that it presents an opportunity to develop a locally tailored system that benefits Welsh farmers, the agriculture sector, and the land. She emphasizes the need to support farmers in producing food sustainably while tackling the climate emergency.

If the Bill is passed by the Welsh Parliament, it will proceed to seek Royal Assent and, upon receipt, become law in Wales. In the meantime, an industry expert is urging supermarkets to collaborate with suppliers in order to lower food inflation.

By passing the Welsh Agriculture Bill, Wales can take a significant step towards sustainable farming, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring a robust food system for its citizens. The support and legislation outlined in the Bill will provide farmers with the framework they need to navigate the challenges they face while making a positive impact on the environment.
