Vetropack Unveils Ultra-Lightweight, Reusable Wine Bottles Vetropack ultra-lightweight reusable wine bottles packaging Food and Beverage Business

The new 350-gram Rhinewine bottle and the 514-gram reusable Rhinewine bottle from Vetropack. With the two bottle variants, the company offers tailored solutions for a wide range of customer requirements and applications.

European glass packaging manufacturer Vetropack has launched two eco-friendly glass options designed to enhance environmental logistics for commercial wine producers.

The company has achieved a remarkable reduction in the weight of the traditional 0.75-litre Rhinewine bottle, now weighing just 350 grams—making it the lightest Rhinewine bottle available in Europe. In addition, Vetropack has introduced a robust reusable Rhinewine model intended to support Austria’s newly implemented nationwide returnable bottle pooling initiative.

This dual introduction provides beverage manufacturers with unique strategic avenues to address escalating logistics expenses, comply with stringent export laws, and reduce their carbon footprints.

The new 350-gram lightweight bottle has been developed through cutting-edge structural optimization and evaluated with automated inline impact sensors. It maintains the classic shape, mechanical resilience, and filling efficiency characteristic of conventional packaging.

For commercial bottlers, adopting this lightweight option creates several operational benefits:

These ultra-light bottles have been manufactured regionally since April 2026 and come in classic olive and cuvée color options.

In line with Austria’s new wine pooling initiative managed by Genossenschaft Deutscher Brunnen, Vetropack is producing a specialized 514-gram returnable Rhinewine bottle at its facility in Pöchlarn. This closed-loop system aims to achieve up to 90% carbon savings throughout its entire operational life.

To facilitate seamless integration, a standardized six-pack crate will be launched in July 2026, ensuring efficient sorting, cleaning, and redistribution processes.

As beverage producers contend with increasing pressure to decarbonize, these innovative solutions provide tailored alternatives based on each winery’s primary distribution approach. Wineries that heavily export can utilize the 350-gram lightweight model to significantly lower shipping weights. In contrast, local producers focusing on direct sales, regional retail, or sustainable initiatives can utilize the heavy-duty pooling bottle to enhance long-term packaging sustainability.

“Reducing the weight of a 750-ml Rhine wine bottle to 350 grams is a significant technological achievement,” asserts Harald Geist from Vetropack. “The success came from our collaborative efforts with technical teams to design a solution that meets our customers’ bottling and logistical needs.”

Regarding the reusable pooling strategy, Geist remarked, “Along with CO₂ reductions of up to 90% across the value chain, users gain the advantage of standardized processes, especially in cleaning and logistics.”

Both glass packaging options are now available to order through Vetropack’s extensive distribution networks across central Europe.
