Givaudan, MISTA, and Bühler have jointly announced the inauguration of a cutting-edge extrusion hub at the MISTA Innovation Center in San Francisco. This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant step forward in MISTA’s food innovation capabilities and underscores the unwavering commitment of Givaudan and Bühler to supporting the evolution of the food system.

Through the collaboration of Givaudan and Bühler, companies now have the opportunity to conduct innovative and efficient product development trials for their extruded products. The hub is equipped with a 30mm twin-screw Bühler extruder, allowing for the processing of both high moisture extrusion, like plant-based meat production, and low moisture extrusion, including snacks and cereals. The facility’s output capacity of up to 50 kilograms per hour enables companies to explore new avenues in product development effortlessly, as the results obtained here can be seamlessly translated to full-scale production equipment.

Fabio Campanile, global head of science and technology at Givaudan Taste & Wellbeing, emphasized the company’s dedication to plant-based alternatives, innovation, and the importance of strategic partnerships. Campanile stated, “Adding extrusion capabilities at MISTA expands our vast innovation network and further demonstrates our commitment to the alternative protein space. We believe that by working together and leveraging our collective expertise, we can continue driving the development of the food industry to deliver sustainable and delightful food experiences for consumers worldwide.”

The hub at MISTA stands as the newest addition to the Global Innovation Network established by Givaudan, Bühler, and other partners, solidifying the collective dedication to fostering innovation and supporting customers globally. Notable innovation facilities within this network include Givaudan’s Zurich Innovation Centre, the Protein Innovation Centre in Singapore, and the Tropical Food Innovation Lab in Brazil.

The official launch of the hub coincided with the bi-annual MISTA in Action program in March. This event brought together industry leaders, executives, and startups from across the globe to exchange ideas and explore collaborative advancements in the food industry. Attendees included representatives from consumer-packaged goods companies, ingredient manufacturers, equipment providers, service firms, and leading funding entities in food tech.

During the event, Ian Roberts, Chief Technology Officer at Bühler, delivered an inspiring keynote address underscoring the significance of collaboration and technological progress in shaping the future of the food industry. Roberts remarked, “Collaboration is key to building a sustainable future for food with the goal of feeding the expected 10 billion world inhabitants by the year 2050. The MISTA facility exemplifies that these partnerships yield tangible results.”

Scott May, founder and head of MISTA, emphasized the center’s role as a catalyst for companies seeking to innovate and drive positive change in the food industry. May stated, “Through unique collaborations, access to new technologies, and expert domain knowledge, MISTA empowers companies to reimagine innovation and steer the industry towards positive transformation. We are confident that the addition of extrusion capabilities will facilitate the development of innovative and sustainable food solutions critical for securing a robust food future.”
