The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has flagged that four varieties of Jolly Rancher branded products, manufactured by The Hershey Company, have been found to contain hazardous Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH), rendering them unsafe for consumption.
This safety concern encompasses all pack sizes, batch codes, and production dates of the following products: Jolly Rancher Hard Candy, Jolly Rancher ‘Misfits’ Gummies, Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Jolly Ranchers Berry Gummies.
Consequently, firms retailing these items have received directives to halt sales immediately, initiate product withdrawals, and enact comprehensive recalls.
The Hershey Company is proactively working to remove these products from the UK market and is coordinating efforts with the FSA to ensure consumer safety.
In 2024, the manufacturer undertook measures to eliminate non-compliant and risky products from the UK market. Nevertheless, the continued importation of non-compliant goods remains a challenge. As a result, the FSA has urged UK enforcing authorities to act swiftly to eliminate these products and safeguard consumers.
Consumers are advised to refrain from consuming the affected products. Those who have already consumed them should not panic, as the associated food safety risk is low. It is worth noting that the mineral oils involved typically pose a risk only when ingested over extended periods.
Individuals who have purchased any of the listed products should dispose of them responsibly at home. If there are any concerns, they can contact their local Trading Standards or environmental health department.
Special caution should be taken regarding consumption, particularly among younger age groups, or for those who consume these sweets frequently. The ingestion of the affected products raises toxicological concerns.
MOAH may cause DNA damage and can potentially heighten cancer risk. Furthermore, given that MOAH is classified as a genotoxic carcinogen, any level of exposure carries inherent risks to human health.
