## Good Meat and Upside Foods Receive USDA Approval for Cultivated Chicken
Good Meat, the cultivated meat division of food technology company Eat Just, has announced that it has received approval from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to sell cultivated chicken to American consumers. This approval follows the USDA’s recent approval of Good Meat’s label and four months after receiving a “no questions” letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“This announcement that we’re now able to produce and sell cultivated meat in the United States is a major moment for our company, the industry, and the food system,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Good Meat and Eat Just. “We appreciate the rigor and thoughtfulness that both the FDA and USDA have applied during this historic two-agency regulatory process.”
Good Meat previously won regulatory approvals for its chicken in Singapore and has been featured on menus at various establishments. With the USDA approval, the company will now focus on scaling up production and reducing manufacturing costs to provide a more sustainable product.
Upside Foods, another cultivated meat company, expressed excitement about the USDA approval, stating that it marks the beginning of a new era in meat production. The company plans to launch with smaller-scale processes but has the potential to expand production capacity in the future.
In the United States, all meat and poultry sold commercially must pass inspection to ensure safety and proper labeling. As part of the approval process, Good Meat and its manufacturing partner, JOINN Biologics, received a grant of inspection for their facilities. This grant includes evaluations of facilities, equipment, sanitation procedures, and food safety controls.
Production has already begun for the first batch of cultivated chicken, which will be sold to restaurateur and humanitarian chef José Andrés, owner of José Andrés Group.
“This grant of inspection is a historic moment for the global food industry,” said Robert Rankin, executive director of the Association of Meat, Poultry, and Seafood Innovation. “AMPS Innovation members continue to make groundbreaking advancements that will help meet increased demand for protein as the world’s population continues to grow.”
## Conclusion
The approval from the USDA is a significant milestone for Good Meat and Upside Foods, allowing them to sell cultivated chicken to American consumers. The companies are focused on scaling up production and providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional meat production. With rigorous inspections and comprehensive safety measures, consumers can be assured of the safety and quality of these cultivated meat products.
