Additionally, it directs manufacturers to other relevant initiatives such as Race to Zero, a campaign led by the United Nations, and the SME Climate Hub, a non-profit global initiative that provides companies with tips, tools, and a Business Carbon Calculator.

Donna Edwards, Director of Made Smarter’s North West Adoption Programme, emphasized the importance of sustainability in manufacturing: “The pressure and scrutiny on the sector to be more sustainable is increasing from all directions. Decarbonisation is not a distraction; it is an imperative.”

She further added, “Made Smarter is committed to helping small and medium-sized manufacturers achieve a decarbonised and digital future. Our ‘Decarbonisation through Digitalisation’ whitepaper serves as a valuable resource for manufacturers seeking support on their journey towards net zero.”

Over the past four years, Made Smarter has provided impartial, tailored, and expert advice to thousands of manufacturers, regardless of their size or sector. Through digital transformation workshops, practical steps for digitisation and a clear digital roadmap are offered. Funding opportunities for technology investments and various support in adapting to the digital and green skills required for a net zero future are also available.

As Edwards highlighted, “In recent years, technology has played a crucial role in tackling challenges and disruptions. It has helped businesses navigate the Covid-19 pandemic, recover, address supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and energy crises. For the climate emergency, digitalisation offers manufacturers a tremendous opportunity to achieve operational efficiencies, decarbonise heat and power, optimize design and materials, and improve logistics and transport.”

“While decarbonisation may seem overwhelming, manufacturers need to recognize that they are not alone. Collaboration is essential in combating climate change, and that’s precisely what Made Smarter is here for,” she concluded.
