ABB, a leading robotics company, has recently announced plans to invest $280 million in expanding its manufacturing presence in Europe through the development of a state-of-the-art ABB Robotics European Campus in Västerås, Sweden. This strategic move aims to meet the growing demand for AI-enabled collaborative and industrial robots, as well as digital solutions for flexible automation.
Expected to open in late 2026, the new ABB Robotics European Campus will serve as a central hub for ABB Robotics’ operations in Europe. By adopting a “local for local” production strategy, the company aims to provide customers in the region with locally manufactured products. Currently, around 95% of ABB’s robots sold in Europe are already manufactured there, reinforcing the company’s commitment to its customers.

The Robotics Campus in Västerås will not only expand ABB’s production capacity by 50%, but it will also bolster the company’s robotics and automation offerings globally. With an expected growth rate of seven percent CAGR through 2027, the European market presents significant opportunities for ABB.
To foster innovation and collaboration, the new campus will feature testing facilities for customers to experiment with the latest automation technologies and solutions. Furthermore, employees, visitors, and students will have the opportunity to actively engage with the vibrant and open atmosphere of the campus.
Marc Segura, President of ABB Robotics, emphasized the focus on developing new digital and AI-enabled technologies at the new R&D center. This will enhance accessibility to robots and lower entry barriers for industries across the board.
In addition to its technological advancements, the new ABB Robotics European Campus will integrate autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) for seamless material and product transportation between various areas. This automation will replace the current organic setup of nine separate buildings that have evolved over time since 1974 in Sweden, further facilitating cross-functional synergies.
