Seafish, the public body supporting the UK seafood industry, has unveiled its Corporate Plan 2023-2028. This strategic roadmap highlights Seafish’s vision for a thriving seafood sector and its determination to drive the industry forward, promoting sustainability, resilience, and prosperity.
The 2023-2028 Corporate Plan has been developed in collaboration with government officials and stakeholders from the seafood industry across the UK following a thorough Strategic Review of Seafish. This inclusive process has shaped the priorities outlined in Seafish’s new 5-year plan, guaranteeing a direct response to the industry’s needs.
According to Marcus Coleman, CEO at Seafish, “Our new Corporate Plan demonstrates our steadfast commitment to supporting the UK seafood industry. By actively consulting with industry and government stakeholders, we’ve been able to shape our new priorities. Through collaboration, we can ensure that our initiatives are driven by the aspirations of the seafood industry.”
The Seafish Corporate Plan 2023-2028 outlines seven key priorities that will guide the organization’s strategic efforts over the next five years:
- Ensuring a safe and skilled workforce: Seafish aims to establish the UK seafood sector as a dynamic, secure, and attractive industry to work in. It also aims to assist individual businesses in implementing effective labor sourcing strategies, as well as creating safe workplaces for all employees.
- Facilitating and promoting international trade: Seafish intends to support businesses in achieving seamless seafood trade with suppliers and markets worldwide.
- Responding to the climate change emergency: In the next five years, Seafish will spearhead efforts to guide the seafood sector towards meeting emissions targets. Seafish will also work with businesses to ensure they adapt to the changing climate’s impact on their day-to-day operations.
- Improving fisheries management: Seafish aspires to manage all commercial fisheries through Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) within the next decade. These plans will be fortified by robust evidence frameworks and promote genuine co-management between industry, government, and researchers.
- Enabling supply chain resilience: Seafish intends to equip businesses with the agility to respond and adapt to emerging issues, highlighting areas that require change and creating collaborative spaces where businesses can devise solutions and seize opportunities.
- Improving data, insight, and innovation: Seafish’s ambition is to become the premier hub for analysis and insights into the operation and performance of the seafood supply chain. Additionally, Seafish aims to coordinate and target innovation investment to address actual challenges faced by seafood businesses.
- Championing Industry Reputation: By proactively identifying reputational risks and planning effective responses, Seafish aims to support the industry in cultivating a positive narrative about seafood.
As Marcus Coleman emphasizes, “Our non-competitive position, collaborating across the supply chain and throughout the UK, is a fundamental strength that enables us to provide the necessary support to the industry. It allows us to work closely with all sectors, ensuring we are prepared to tackle the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities presented by an increasingly volatile and evolving landscape.”
