Tesco Announces Leadership Change: CEO Jason Tarry to Step Down, Succeeded by Matthew Barnes Former Aldi boss, Tesco CEO Food and Beverage Business

Tesco, the renowned UK retailer, has recently revealed that its CEO, Jason Tarry, will be leaving the company in March 2024. This transition will see the former CEO of Aldi, Matthew Barnes, take over Tarry’s position as the new CEO. Tarry, who has dedicated 33 years to Tesco across various divisions, will be succeeded by Barnes, who will officially assume his role on March 1st, 2024.

Ken Murphy, the CEO of Tesco Group, expressed his gratitude for Tarry’s substantial contributions to the company. Throughout Tarry’s leadership, Tesco has become its most competitive self, firmly rooted in its commitment to customer and employee satisfaction.

Tarry himself acknowledged the significance of his journey with Tesco over the past three decades. While the decision to move on was not an easy one, he believes it is the right time for him to pursue new endeavors. Tarry expressed his deep appreciation for his incredible colleagues and the lifelong friendships he has formed within the company. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his role as UK CEO until March, with an increased determination to provide Tesco’s customers with the best possible Christmas experience, knowing it will be his last as a Tesco colleague.

“Extensive” Retail Experience

Matthew Barnes, formerly CEO of Aldi UK & Ireland and co-head of Aldi Sud’s executive board, will be taking on the role of Tesco’s new UK CEO. He boasts a wealth of experience in the retail industry and has overseen Aldi’s international business ventures, as well as its Global Sourcing, Buying, and Supply Chain operations.

Ken Murphy expressed his confidence in Barnes’ appointment, stating, “Matthew’s extensive retail experience, competitive spirit, and challenger mindset will undoubtedly contribute to Tesco’s continued success in the UK market and shape our future strategies to cater to evolving customer needs.”
