A recent study has found a solution to the issue of male chick culling in the laying industry. Traditionally, male chicks are culled as soon as they are born, as they cannot lay eggs and are not suitable for meat production. However, new technology is being developed to determine the gender of chicks before they hatch. German-based Seleggt is one such company working on gender determination technologies.

The study, published in the journal PLOS One, has discovered that chick embryos emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be detected to determine their sex. By using suction cups already used in commercial egg handling, researchers can “sniff” the air around the egg without opening it and sample the VOCs. This method allows the researchers to determine the chick’s sex with an 80% accuracy rate and was able to identify the sex of the chicks at eight days of incubation.

The implications of this study are significant, as it would allow for the ethical disposal of male eggs before chicks experience life, eliminating the need for culling. The industry estimates that 7 billion day-old chicks are disposed of globally annually, and this method has the potential to reduce this number significantly. Furthermore, environmental benefits can be achieved as protein can be repurposed in the supply chain, reducing wastage.

The adoption of cull-free systems may take some time to be fully integrated into the industry’s operations. However, the researchers believe that this system based on VOC detection has the potential to be a competitive alternative to the current method once fully integrated with modern automation for egg handling.

In conclusion, the study offers a viable and humane solution to the male chick culling issue that plagues the laying industry. It also presents an opportunity for greater sustainability in the supply chain. The industry must adopt such solutions to support ethical and sustainable practices, and consumer choices can influence this change positively.
