Terry Jones will depart his role as NFU director general in April 2026, marking exactly 10 years since he assumed the position.

Before joining the NFU in April 2016, Jones served as the Director General of the Provision Trade Federation. His prior experience includes a tenure as the Director of Communications at the Food and Drink Federation.

Additionally, he spent several years in various communications roles within the NFU from 2002 to 2011.

Commenting on Jones’ decision to step down, NFU President Tom Bradshaw praised him as a “superb leader” who has effectively guided the organization through challenging times in the food manufacturing industry.

“We will miss his wise counsel, inspiring leadership of our staff, his deep knowledge of food and farming, and his understanding of the workings of Whitehall and Westminster,” Bradshaw noted.

“While his leadership on significant issues and his political and policy expertise are well recognized, what is less visible outside the NFU is how he has strategically modernized the organization. This transformation has made the NFU more resilient, better equipped to serve our members, and attractive to some of the best talent in the business.”

“There’s no doubt that his legacy in this area has been instrumental in making the NFU not only fit for the future but also more effective in the present.”

In response, Jones remarked that serving as NFU director general had been a true privilege.

“It has been the privilege of my career to work alongside NFU members, officeholders, and our exceptional staff to build a better future for British farming and growing,” he stated.

“Ten years feels like the appropriate time to hand over the reins and explore new challenges. Until then, I remain focused on enhancing NFU operations to ensure we deliver for our members now and in the future.”

“I hope that my extended 12-month notice period will provide ample time for the NFU to appoint a successor, enabling a comprehensive search and a thorough handover.”
