The newly established facility will serve over 200 locations of the chain across the north-east of England, aiming to enhance the speed and freshness of produce deliveries.
Expected to significantly improve delivery efficiency, McDonald’s asserts that this distribution centre will reduce average journey times by “around an hour” per trip.
Furthermore, McDonald’s emphasizes that the Darlington site will bolster its sustainability initiatives by eliminating approximately 2.5 million road miles annually from the supply chain, aligning with its broader net-zero goals for 2040.
Constructed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards, the site incorporates solar energy generation and a robust electric vehicle infrastructure, featuring 13 electric vehicle chargers and 17 electric trailer points.
According to McDonald’s, over 70 suppliers will deliver more than 400 products to the centre, which will be carefully stored, sorted, and distributed to fast-food outlets in the region.
“The new distribution centre is a major milestone for our business and demonstrates our commitment to the North East. Investing in Darlington means investing in people, in local jobs, and in a more sustainable future,” stated Laura Henderson, VP of supply chain at McDonald’s UK & Ireland.
“By cutting road miles, strengthening our network, and supporting local employment at scale, this centre shows how we can grow responsibly while supporting our customers and the communities we serve.”
The grand opening, celebrated on March 4, was attended by members of Darlington Borough Council and notable representatives from McDonald’s, including Laura Henderson and Parv Sangera, MD at Martin Brower UK & Ireland.
This initiative stands out as a positive development for job seekers in the north-east, which, according to the 2025 Youth Opportunities Index, is one of the most challenging places for young people to find jobs or training in the UK.
Sanghera remarked: “We’re incredibly proud to open the doors to our Darlington facility, a project that reflects our long-standing partnership with McDonald’s and our shared focus on resiliency, innovation, and sustainability.”
“Built to BREEAM Excellent standards and incorporating a unique frozen chilled ambient cold chain, the centre represents a truly forward-thinking approach. It shows what’s possible when we combine operational excellence with a strong commitment to the communities we serve.”
