FrieslandCampina, a key supplier to McDonald’s, plays a crucial role in providing essential dairy ingredients to the fast-food giant. To achieve their sustainability objectives, FrieslandCampina outlines specific measures implemented by its farmers, including lengthening the grazing season, using feed with a lower environmental impact, employing feed additives to reduce methane emissions, and separating manure and urine on the farm. Many cooperative farmers additionally generate renewable energy, which is utilized in FrieslandCampina’s production sites.

With an impressive network of 15,137 dairy farmer members in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, FrieslandCampina recognizes the importance of forging partnerships to accelerate on-farm carbon footprint reduction. Their collaboration extends beyond McDonald’s, as they have also joined forces with Mondelēz International and Agrifirm/DSM, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 14% in 2025 compared to 2019. This partnership benefits all member dairy farmers in the three countries who actively work towards lowering GHG emissions on their farms.

Last year, FrieslandCampina made headlines by collaborating with Agrifirm and DSM to pioneer the large-scale on-farm use of Bovaer, a feed additive targeted at reducing methane emissions. The initiative involved 158 dairy farms and 20,000 cows in the Netherlands, resulting in a significant decrease of 10,000 tons of CO2e in methane emissions.

Monitoring and tracking progress is essential for FrieslandCampina, who utilizes the Annual Nutrient Cycling Assessment (KringloopWijzer) as a monitoring tool. This tool provides farm-specific insights on climate and biodiversity and enables the recognition and reward of member dairy farmers’ efforts. Through the Foqus planet sustainable development program, cooperative farmers receive financial premiums based on their achievements in climate, biodiversity, pasture grazing, animal health, and animal welfare. The premium for member dairy farmers’ GHG emissions results can reach up to €1.50 per 100 kilos of milk.
