Mars Inc. has confirmed that its Mars Snacking plants throughout Europe now operate entirely on renewable energy sources. This accomplishment, according to the confectionery giant, comes after substantial investments in its European manufacturing capability, totaling €1.5 billion over the last five years.
Since investing in its first European wind farm in 2016, the company has systematically transitioned all confectionery manufacturing sites across Europe to utilize renewable electricity.
Moreover, Mars is heavily investing in reducing its energy consumption, acquiring Guarantees of Origin certificates for the remaining renewable electricity and biomethane, which is equivalent to the electricity and natural gas consumed in Mars’ direct confectionery operations in Europe.
“At Mars, we believe that the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today,” states Marc Carena, regional president for Mars Wrigley. “Therefore, we measure our success not only by financial results, but also by the positive impact we have on people, the planet, and society. Sustainability makes good business sense and is at the heart of our strategy, and we are committed to making a meaningful difference, ensuring that today’s actions create lasting benefits for future generations.”
This significant milestone is particularly noteworthy for a company known for iconic brands such as Twix, M&Ms, Bounty, Maltesers, and the Mars bar itself, as it strives to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
