In an exciting development for the food and beverage industry, retailer Ocado has partnered with the Soil Association to drive positive changes in farming practices, promoting sustainability and care for the natural world. This collaboration involves five UK farms that specialize in dairy, beef, sheep, orchard fruit, and potatoes. These farms will serve as training centers for other farmers, sharing expertise on nature-friendly agricultural practices.

The training sessions will cover agroforestry, hedgerow restoration, and diverse crop rotations to enhance soil health and reduce the need for harmful pesticides. Three of the farms involved also supply Ocado, a company known for supporting small UK producers through initiatives like its Best of British aisle. This online platform features over 800 UK farmed products endorsed by Defra and the NFU.

Ocado Retail CEO, Hannah Gibson, emphasized the importance of supporting local farmers and promoting British produce. The partnership with the Soil Association reinforces this commitment by encouraging agroecological farming practices. Soil Association CEO, Helen Browning, highlighted the need for sustainable agriculture to protect biodiversity and combat climate change.

This partnership will also focus on advancing farm animal welfare through research and best practices. Together, Ocado and the Soil Association aim to create a ‘Farm to Fork Ambassadors program’ to promote healthy and sustainable food practices within the industry. This collaboration represents a significant step towards fixing the broken food and farming system.
