Tetra Pak has formed the Dairy Processing Task Force, a collaborative initiative that brings together various stakeholders in the dairy processing sector to assess existing technology and emissions reporting frameworks. The primary objective is to optimize approaches to decarbonization within the industry. The results of this work will be communicated through the Global Dairy Platform network, which is governed by representatives from leading dairy companies such as Fonterra, Arla Foods, and Dairy Farmers of America. Tetra Pak will also utilize its global network to share the outcomes with interested parties.
Although the specific goals of the task force are yet to be determined, it is anticipated that the focus will be on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sharing best practices, implementing emission reduction strategies, and establishing sustainable guidelines and reporting frameworks to promote consistency within the industry. Several major dairy manufacturers have already joined the task force, and discussions are slated to begin in August.
Heinrich Iversen, Processing Director at Tetra Pak, explained that the intention of the task force is not to develop new reporting methods but rather to evaluate existing approaches to identify areas for improvement and emission reduction solutions. The task force is open to participation from anyone interested in contributing actively to the work.
Efficiency is a key aspect of the task force’s agenda, as optimizing existing systems is deemed equally important, if not more so, than developing new technologies. Iversen cited examples of how Tetra Pak has helped clients reduce water usage through upgraded membrane filtration systems. Such improvements in current processes can lead to greater efficiency and lower emissions.
It is worth noting that this initiative aims to attract a wide range of industry representatives, ensuring diverse participation across the sector. The task force aims to identify specific areas to focus on by the end of the year, implementing solutions that demonstrate their effectiveness in reducing emissions.
